Khai Islands Half Day or Full Day: Which Fits Your Time

The Khai islands are the shortest island day Phuket offers. Three small islands sit in the sheltered water east of the island, about 15 minutes by speedboat from Ao Po Pier, Chalong or Royal Phuket Marina. Almost every listing is sold with a choice between a half day and a full day, usually at the same booking page, and the difference between them is not what most people assume.

The three islands are not interchangeable
This is the part the listings flatten into “3 Khai Islands”, and it is the part that decides which option suits you.
Khai Nok is the developed one: a dome of rock over white sand, beach restaurants, kiosks and bars. Beach chairs are charged – local guides put it at around 150 THB for a pair, free if you buy food – and the toilets are pay-to-use. This is where most boats stop longest and where the crowd is.
Khai Nai is the biggest, with close to 500 metres of sand, more restaurants, chairs and umbrellas. The water is shallow a long way out, which makes it the easiest of the three for small children and for anyone who wants to stand up rather than swim.
Khai Nui has no beach worth the name and no facilities at all. Boats anchor offshore and you snorkel from the ladder. It also has the best reef of the three, with reef fish, clownfish and harmless blacktip reef sharks. If snorkelling is your reason for coming, this is the island that justifies the trip – and it is the one a rushed half-day is most likely to skip.
Sergeant major damselfish swarm the shallows and will surround anyone standing still. Feeding them is banned. The Khai islands are a protected area under Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and tourists have been arrested and fined for feeding fish here – a case at Khai Nok ended in a court fine, and the law allows for considerably more. Whatever the boat crew hands around, that rule is not theirs to waive.

The full-day option does not add a fourth island. It adds beach time on the same three, plus lunch. That is worth paying for if your group is happy to spend an afternoon on a beach chair with a drink, and it is a long, hot mistake if they are not. The islands are small; there is nothing to walk to, and shade away from the restaurant terraces is limited.
The half day, by contrast, does something the longer island trips cannot: it ends. A morning departure has you back at the hotel in the early afternoon with the day still usable, which is the real argument for the Khai islands over Phi Phi.
Take the morning slot if you have the choice. The islands fill with tour groups through the day, and an early departure is the difference between the photographs in the listing and a beach with four boats’ worth of people on it. Several listings sell a morning and an afternoon half day at the same price; they are not the same product.
No park fee, and why that matters here
The Khai islands are outside the national parks that charge for Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and the Similans. There is no separate cash collection at the pier, and several operators state that island entry is already included. On a Phi Phi day the park fee can add 400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child on top of the ticket; here it does not arise.
Put next to a €19.98 starting price, that makes this one of the cheapest island days in our inventory – almost everything below it is a ferry transfer rather than an excursion. What you should still check on the booking page: whether hotel pickup is included and from which zones, whether lunch is in the full-day price, and whether snorkelling gear and a life jacket are provided or rented.
When the Khai islands are the wrong choice
They are small, busy and close to shore, and they do not look like the pictures that sell Thailand. There are no limestone towers and no famous bay. If you have one boat day in your whole trip and you came for the scenery, spend it on Phi Phi and Maya Bay or on Phang Nga Bay instead, and accept the longer day.
They are also a poor choice if you want serious snorkelling and are willing to travel for it. Racha Yai, 45 minutes out, has clearer water on most days; our Coral and Racha comparison sets that out.
Where they are hard to beat is the combination of a 15-minute crossing, shallow water and a half-day option – which is why they come up again in our island hopping with children guide. If you are deciding between boat types rather than destinations, read speedboat or catamaran first; on a crossing this short, the hull barely matters.
