Honest distances and seasons

The Similans are closed from mid-May to mid-October, Maya Bay every August and September, and the Phang Nga piers are an hour from the west-coast beaches. We put that up front, not in the small print.

Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Maya Bay open, and can you swim there?

Maya Bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September for the reef to recover, so a tour booked for those weeks will skip it. When it is open, boats no longer anchor in the bay: they moor in Loh Samah on the back of the island and you walk in over a boardwalk. Swimming is not allowed – you may wade in up to your knees. Visits are capped at one hour and at 375 people at a time.

Is the national park fee included in the tour price?

Usually not, and it is the single most common surprise on the pier. For the Phi Phi islands rangers charge 400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child, payable in cash in baht on the day; divers pay another 200 THB on their first diving day. Phang Nga Bay and the Similans charge their own fees. Each booking page states whether the fee is included – it is worth reading that line before comparing two prices.

When can you visit the Similan Islands?

Only between 15 October and 15 May. Thailand closes the park for the southwest monsoon, and no operator can get you there in between – if you are on Phuket in July, the Similans are not an option. In season, a day trip from Phuket runs 10 to 13 hours door to door, because you first drive an hour or more north to Thap Lamu pier near Khao Lak. From Khao Lak itself it is 8 to 9 hours.

Can you swim off the beaches in the rainy season?

Often not safely. From May to October the southwest monsoon pushes surf and rip currents onto the west-coast beaches, and Phuket records roughly 20 to 30 drownings a year, most of them in those months and most of them where a red flag was already flying. Karon and the south end of Kata Yai produce the most rip currents. A red flag is not advice, it is a closure – and conditions can change within an hour.

Which elephant camps are actually ethical?

We cannot certify that, and neither can the words in a camp’s name. „Sanctuary", „ethical" and „rescued" are not protected terms in Thailand; riding camps use them too. What we can do is repeat what the operator states on its own booking page – observation only, feeding, bathing, contact or none of it – and mark it as the operator’s claim. Some camps stopped all feeding contact in 2026 and now only let you watch. If the programme matters to you, read that section before you book.

How long does it take to get anywhere from the airport?

Phuket airport sits in the north of the island and almost every hotel is south of it: roughly 50 minutes to Patong, 60 to Karon, 70 to Kata and 45 to Phuket Town, longer in the afternoon. That matters for tours too – the piers for Phang Nga Bay are in the north-east, 45 to 60 minutes from the west-coast beaches, which is why a „full-day" island tour often starts with a 6 a.m. pick-up.
